GirlyObsessions gets a facelift!

Hi everyone! I’m beyond excited to finally share our blog redesign that went live yesterday! The redesign has been a work in progress since the site went live a year ago, but it’s all come together over the past few months. We are still working out a few bugs with images not lining up (due to changing the column width), and I have to go into every one of the 300+ posts and fix image sizes. Sooo much fun! (Although some images are still a bit buggy in Firefox, so we’ll try to fix that issue tonight.)

Another thing that happened by changing the column width is a lot of posts now have widows (where one word appears on a line by itself). I’m sure I’m the only one who cares, but as a designer, I painstakingly try to avoid them, but now they show up everywhere. Oh well. So bear with us while we work through some bugs, there aren’t many. And we still have a few things to add to the design throughout the week that no one would know is missing but me, but for the most part, its live and working!

And a HUGE THANKS to my super talented husband for bringing the design to life. And thank you for being so patient while I ask you to move things one pixel up, one down, no back up, no down, now to the right. Love you!!! This site wouldn’t exist without your help!

GirlyObsessions redesign

Here is a breakdown of what we did:

1. Updated logo and fonts.
I never really loved the bracketed logo, which I put together in like 2 seconds. I just never thought it was girly enough, and I felt too tied to the brackets as a design element. Plus now I see brackets everywhere, so I wanted to move away from them. You may have noticed we’ve been using a script font for a while now in the Obsession Collections and other posts, so the script has now become a bigger part of the design, showing up on the sidebar and comments and in other various places. Just adds a bit more girly!

2. We have navigation! Finally!
I hated not having a top nav, or any sort of nav really. I didn’t think it was necessary when I did the initial design, but as the site has become more robust, I felt the need to include it. It allows easy access to other pages of our site that fell to the bottom of the sidebar. I moved the search to the top, and the nav is sticky so it stays at the top of the browser as you scroll down the page, providing an easy way to go back to the homepage, or access other parts of the site.

3. New column widths.
I hated that my images were 500px wide but the text was wider. I know not everyone loves justified type (I don’t love it myself and I’m still debating this one), but keeping it for now. Creating a smaller post column allowed us to have a wider sidebar for sponsor ads and a shorter category list.

4. Dropped the Art & Design category.
This may seem a bit ironic considering I’m a designer, but we never had a ton of content for this category, and while I love design, it was just never a big topic for our blog. Plus the Art & Design things we want to post about can usually fit under another category, or at least under Mixed Bag.

5. Updated comments.
We updated these a while ago, but now they just look more incorporated into the overall site design.

6. Updated About Us.
Finally added a picture of us! Although you have prob seen it if you’ve visited our Facebook page.

7. Sponsors!
We are excited to have blog sponsors! And we’re happy to take any new sponsors that may want to reach our growing, targeted audience!

8. Related posts and actual page numbers.
I’ve wanted to add related posts for a while now as an easy way to access similar blog content. We also added easy access to Previous/Next posts. And since we have over 300 posts, we thought some actual page numbers at the bottom of the homepage and category pages might be useful!

10. Blogroll!
We both read a ton of blogs, and I’ve had a blogroll put together since I started the site, but it never had a home. Now it does, and we’re happy to finally share the love for all the sites we read!

We added a few other pages (Contact, Sponsor & Subscribe) which you can find in the nav, as well as finally adding a blog subscription form on the sidebar for those who want daily post updates. I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff, but you get the idea!

Of course, this redesign wouldn’t have a purpose if we didn’t have any readers, so a BIG THANKS to those of you who visit our site and keep coming back! I hope you like the redesign!!
